Description of Design and History :
The general design approach, composition and tonality of this andthe following carpet proved so popular that almost identical works wereproduced in both Kashan and Isfahan; they nevertheless represent aninherently Tabrizi style. This presumably derives from a combination ofa classic prototype of the two Ardabil Carpets (in the Victoria andAlbert Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum) with a typical Tabrizadjustment in the response to prevailing Western decorative tastes ofthe Twentieth Century. An eight-lobed medallion mixing pastels greens,eggshell blue and soft brown with the inevitable dark indigo blue, withornamental pendant lamp motifs extending vertically is undoubtedly asimplified, updated version of the vast Ardabil medallion construction.Four large corner palmettes make for an interesting diagonalcompositional effect within the varied palmette-and-leaf secondarypattern that covers the mid-red ground.
