Description of Design and History :
The small market town of Gombad-i-Qabus with around 15,000inhabitants, lies near the frontier with the U.S.S.R. As well as itsown carpet production, the town serves as a market for carpets broughtin by the Turkoman who are settled in the surrounding area. Frequentlysold as ´Persian-Bokhara´ carpets, these modern pieces do not reach thequality of original Turkoman work. Visible from the surrounding steppesand from the nearby Gurgan desert, stands the high, imposing tomb ofQabus who ruled here at the turn of the century.
