Description of Design and History:
The town of Gendje was called Elizabethpol under the Tzars and isnow known as Kirovabad, the principal town of the Soviet SocialistRepublic of Azerbaydzhanskaya (Soviet Azerbaijan). It is almostcentrally placed between the Caucasian weaving areas of Kazak, Karabaghand Shirvan and acted as an important marketing centre to the rugs ofthose places and produced its own weavings in a style which shows theconsiderable influence of the major areas surounding it. This lovelypiece is a typical long Gendje rug with contrasting stripes containingS motifs. The tree of life repeated border in lovely light browncolour gives a beautiful combination to the main design. This piece hassuperb colours. The colour range and motifs are similar to those onShahsavan Tribal rugs from Moghan.
