Description of Design and History :
The triple-medallion design has given its name to a well-definedgroup of Kazak rugs which were probably produced all over thesouth-west Caucasus. The medallions are usually two cream and one darkblue, or vice versa, and the field colour red. The motifs within theouter medallions shows a clear affinity with the medallions of theLori-Pambak rugs. Few Kazaks of the antique period are so original inappearance as, this item, although its Kazak pedigree is unmistakeable,and there are traces in its design that connect it to the Lori Pambakgroup, while its splendid main border pattern is a vivid interpretationof one of the most effective repeat themes from the 19th Century Kazakvocabulary.
